Why I became a Sleep Consultant

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

Why did I become a sleep consultant?

In a nutshell when my first born, Rory, was 4 months old I just COULDN’T DO IT ANYMORE.

My husband was a shift worker and had a demanding job. He was often on nightshift and doing TONS of overtime. I was left at home alone with Rory who only ever napped for 25 minutes at a time and who I held in my arms until 1am in the morning. Don't get me wrong, I treasure those cuddles with my little guy, but what I was doing wasn't sustainable for me or Rory. I still remember the moment I broke down and rang my husband at work and told him I couldn’t do it anymore. Something had to change.

A friend of mine had used a sleep consultant in the past. I had thought about it prior to my breaking point but had hesitations about the cost, the crying and of course I judged myself (like every mum does) - ‘Is there something wrong with me? Do I lack the Mum gene or something? How come everyone else I know is coping?’ The worst was the criticism from older generations ‘We never had sleep consultants or the internet back when we had young children and we coped.. bla bla bla’

Well, hiring a sleep consultant was a GAME CHANGER. Literally within the week life changed for the better. I learnt so much about the importance of sleep, I felt like myself again and Rory absolutely thrived developmentally. I started to eat dinner again and my husband and I gained our nights on the couch back (when he wasn’t working). Not to mention the sleep I started getting!

To this day Rory loves his sleep. So much so that some days he puts HIMSELF to bed at 5.30pm and there’s no arguing with him! The next morning at 7am we greet a refreshed, happy, energized little boy.

I now implement the same sleep strategies with my 4-month-old Piper.

So, to acknowledge those hesitations that I had:

The cost – It was the best money we’ve ever spent (not including the $300 we spent to rescue our first fur baby Dakota. She is priceless). We still reap the benefits of the that 500 bucks we spent on a sleep consultant until this day. It was an invaluable experience for all family members.

The crying – You don’t have to let your baby cry for periods of time that you’re uncomfortable with. You can be right by your baby’s side. Don’t get me wrong, you must show a bit of resilience, however you will soon come to realise the majority of the time when baby is crying at bedtime its protest crying – your baby is not in pain.

The judgement – well this one is simple… what the hell was I worried about?! Who cares what other people are doing and what other people think? This experience has made me a better mum, a better wife and brought me back to the person I was before I became a sleep deprived mother. So what if our parents or grandparents didn’t have the internet or the resources we have today? Doesn’t that make them the unlucky ones? I mean, back in the day there was no such thing as a washing machine – does that mean we should all go out the back and wash our clothes in a bucket? No, I didn’t think so.

Sleep Consultants are there to support you through probably one of the most testing periods of your life. I now strive to help families like my own implement good sleep skills to benefit everyone in their family.

Let’s get bub back in their own cot and Dad off the couch and back in his own bed.

Let’s get husband and wife back on the couch by 8pm watching their favorite TV shows together.

And most importantly let’s give our precious little ones the gift of sleep so they can wake up energized every day, develop and thrive!

And my friends, that is why I became a sleep consultant.
